Marilyn Callahan, New Guest Artist at Gateway Gallery May 23 - June 29

The One That Got Away, Painting by Marilyn Callahan

B1, Painting by Marilyn Callahan

Marilyn’s “Wild” ceramic birds elicit the comment, “They make me laugh.”  Her flock is hatched from a desire to be both a sculptor and a painter.  Intricate manipulation of the clay to create poses and expressions inspire a sense of Pixar come to life.  The versatility of acrylic paint provides a subtlety that enables her to experiment with minute details and a more painterly surface treatment.  With a “sprinkling” of bling, her creations must each have a name and a story.  Her pastels emulate the colorful and imaginative feel of her “Wild” birds.  The mosaic-like compositions and the subtle blending of hues present an intricate graphic rendition of nature.  Each piece reaches out to that thrill we all experienced in our childhood when our eyes were dazzled by bursts of color and light.

Marilyn’s art reflects her desire to communicate the whimsy, imagination, and creative excitement that children embrace.  She has chosen to dedicate her work to her wonderful childhood memories, her children, and every one of her students who remind her to create from the heart.

Jim Irwin, New Guest Artist at Gateway Gallery May 23 - June 29

The Zebra Girl, Photograph by Jim Irwin

My photography is mostly of nature and wildlife. And being a veterinarian, my interest in animal photography should be of no surprise. I see animal photography as a way of bringing more than just color or design to a wall but rather a dimension of personality as well. The animal close-ups especially demonstrate that phenomenon. The close-up view enables one to see the natural features that are usually missed in real life due to all the movement and surrounding distractions. In effect, a "personality" seems to appear. My goal is to capture this "personality" in an artistic fashion that can be displayed in a person’s home for regular enjoyment.

My interest in animal art is directed more toward wildlife rather than toward the more common domestic animals. While they usually present a challenge to photograph, I find the images to be far more fascinating. Additionally, the photography creates an environmental awareness that may even translate into improving animal welfare, especially for the African species. Through environmental abuse, habitat destruction, poaching and other human interactions the future of many of these animals is in doubt. This special photography of these species can provide a chance to enjoy their being and hopefully they will survive.

I am a juried artist for the Greater  St. Louis Art Association and the Best Of Missouri Hands.

More Art from Featured Artist John Barhydt

Tunnel by John Barhydt

As a child, John was exposed to the world of film photography and the wet darkroom. “I was hooked on the magic I could create there” he reflects. John’s father taught him developing and printing technique while his grandfather supplied inspiration from stories told through his slide shows.  The advent of digital cameras added to his repertoire. The result one sees to this lifelong artist’s evolution is imagery using boldness of color and light that is designed to express the moment.

GATEWAY GALLERY IN CLAYON PRESENTS
“IF THIS BE NOT I”,    MAY 23 – JUNE 29
Opening reception held for the artist 6-9 p.m. Friday June 8
Gateway Gallery is excited to be featuring the dynamic abstract paintings of Sheldon Johnson in his exhibit “If This Be Not I”. Guest artists include  wildlife photographer Jim Irwin and  mixed media artist Marilyn Callahan.  This show runs May 23 through June 29 with an opening reception from 6 to 9 pm on Friday June 8 at 21 North Bemiston Ave, Clayton.
Johnson is known for the vibrant color and brushstroke usage that is apparent in each of his abstracts. This show builds on that foundation with a very large politically based painting reflecting today’s political upheaval and inspired by the work of well known painter Philip Guston.  The large oil blends abstraction and surreal elements leaving more conceptual symbols to populate his smaller pieces.
Despite an ongoing commitment to his MFA program at Fontbonne University, Johnson has and continues to exhibit widely in the Midwest including Cedarhurst Museum in Mt Vernon, Il, The Foundry Art Centre at St Charles, Contemporary Art Museum, St Louis, and the Kansas City Artists Coalition Gallery. His work is collected nationwide.
Jim Irwin’s photography is largely directed toward wildlife, using the close-up to capture natural features that are usually missed in real time due to the nature of movement in these animals’ lives and the need for humans to not get too close.
His images give us a chance to see the personalities that emerge.  A juried artist for Greater St Louis Art Association and Best of Missouri Hands, you will find Irwin’s work shown widely in the St Louis region.
Marilyn Callahan creates ceramic birds with attitude and pastel mosaic–like compositions whose nature reflects that same colorful and imaginative feel. In both mediums, Callahan manages to create poses and expressions that give a sense of Pixar come to life.  She is an arts educator in the Lindbergh Schools whose inspiration is derived from the energy and creative excitement of her young students and it is definitely reflected in her work.
