Gateway Gallery Artist Jerry Schmutz Commissioned by Webster University.

Jerry was awarded a commissioned project for Webster University. Their president and vice president were to travel to Beijing in early September to make a presentation in respect of the 50th anniversary of the collaboration between Webster and the Chinese Language and Culture Institute there. They needed a nice gift to go along with the presentation as well as some photos to use for their PowerPoint presentation in China. Jerry was asked to get some photos of the then-running Chinese Lantern Festival at the St. Louis Botanical Garden in order to pair up a photo representing the Chinese culture with a photo of an iconic St. Louis scene or object. The composite double matted and framed photo would be presented to the Chinese during their visit and presentation. Webster chose a Chinese Lantern photo and paired it with a fairly traditional photo of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. A memorial inscription was embedded in an opening of the double mat in English and in Chinese. The president and vice president signed the mat spaces with their personal goodwill wishes.  The project was completed and FedEx ed to China just in time for the presentation. Their feedback was that they “hit it out of the park” with this one. It was very well received.
