Denzil Hawes-Davis, New guest artist at Gateway Gallery, April 8 through May 17.

Guest artist, Denzil Hawes-Davis, will exhibit photographs as a Gateway Gallery guest artist April 8 through May 17, 2013. Stillness-in-motion is what Denzil hopes to achieve through the lens of his camera. If he is successful, reflections of stillness-in-motion will shine in his photos of nature and people and their various patterns, backgrounds, colors, shapes, textures, and abstracts. According to Elizabeth Stone of Rocky Mountain School of Photography, "Denzil Hawes-Davis proposes a new way of seeing the land and his environment with his camera. He strives to move beyond strict documentation of his subject into the non-representational world of color, shape, and light. His images move, dance, and excite."

Cheryl Dorris returns to Gateway Gallery as a guest artist April 3 through May 17.

Guest artist, Cheryl Dorris, will exhibit photographs as a Gateway Gallery guest artist April 3, 2013 through May 17, 2013. Photography has been Cheryl’s passion her whole life. Through the years her work began to take shape via the landscape — open air, changing light and breathtaking beauty. She is inspired by the warm light from a sunset, shimmering reflections on water and the crisp hues found in cities abroad. In these places she feels both calm and energized, and is drawn to photograph them. She loves to travel around the country and around the world and work with the images she captures. Her work has been published in magazines and books and has been shown in various galleries around the St Louis area. She has received recognition in numerous juried competitions, including Best in Show, Old Orchard Gallery, St Louis; and a finalist in the SEEN Competition, Studio Altius, St Louis.

Arnie Heuvelman returns to Gateway Gallery as a Guest Artist, January 5, 2013 – February 15.

GATEWAY GALLERY IN CLAYTON PRESENTS “Room with a View”, January 5, 2013 – February 15.

Arnie has studied under some of the best woodturners in St. Louis, Utah, North Carolina, and other schools in the country. Now he looks at a tree and can see the beauty, learning that same tree is where the art of a bowl starts. He has come to love finding trees with imperfections - meaning rotten wood. Taking something that is starting to go back to mother earth and making a bowl, learning how to cut that tree in such a way so the grain makes the article you’re making is an art in its self. Arnie uses every section making things like spinning tops or Christmas bird houses. When looking at his bowls please pick them up and feel them. Remember this piece came from something that took 30, 40 or even 50 years to grow. If you take the proper care it will last another 50 years. Arnie is a member of Best of Missouri Hands, American Association of Woodturners, St. Louis Woodturners, Show Me Woodturners, and has spent the last 4 years doing demos at Silver Dollar City and doing shows as far away as Connecticut and Iowa.

Cheryl is a self-taught photographer with a marketing background who has been photographing the landscape since 1997. She loves to travel around the country and around the world and work with the images she captures. Her work has been published in magazines and books and has been shown in various galleries around the St Louis area. She has received recognition in numerous juried competitions, including Best in Show, Old Orchard Gallery, St Louis; and a finalist in the SEEN Competition, Studio Altius, St Louis.

Guest artist, Rip Kastaris, will exhibit “The Art of Blues” as a Gateway Gallery guest artist January 5, 2013 through February 15, 2013. As a veteran illustrator, designer and video editor, Rip uses all his skills to help bring visual gravity to the work of so many great talents on the St. Louis Blues scene. Rip has created images for the rock star Sting, produced official art of four consecutive Olympic Games and painted the four-story Steamboat Mural on the Great River Road in Alton, IL but his passion for the last two years has been the art of Blues music. Live music has turned into musical art full of life. You can feel the rhythms and harmonies in his blues, reds and yellows. He draws the music as well as the musicians in impressions he sketches and paints from life and in the studio. Come see the first time exhibition of his newest work. Jim Irwin, New Guest Artist at Gateway Gallery August 22 – September 28, 2012.

GATEWAY GALLERY IN CLAYTON PRESENTS “Artist Driven”, August 22 – September 28, 2012.

Guest artist, Jim Irwin, photographs mostly nature and wildlife. As a veterinarian, his interest in animal photography should be of no surprise. Jim sees animal photography as a way of bringing more than just color or design to a wall but rather a dimension of personality as well. The close-up view enables one to see the natural features that are usually missed in real life due to all the movement and surrounding distractions. In effect, a "personality" seems to appear. Jim’s goal is to capture this "personality" in an artistic fashion that can be displayed in a person’s home for regular enjoyment. His interest in animal art is directed more toward wildlife rather than toward the more common domestic animals. The photography creates an environmental awareness that may even translate into improving animal welfare, especially for the African species. Through environmental abuse, habitat destruction, poaching and other human interactions the future of many of these animals is in doubt. This special photography of these species can provide a chance to enjoy their being and hopefully they will survive. Jim is a juried artist for the Greater St. Louis Art Association and the Best of Missouri Hands.

Greg Kluempers, New Guest Artist at Gateway Gallery July 5 - August 17

My work explores the relationship of forms, textures and color in the everyday world. Many of my images are extractions from an old building, a distorted reflection, an architectural detail and the juxtaposition of adjoining buildings. I use these to create abstract geometrical images. I also have always been interested in landscapes. Besides understanding composition, a big part of capturing landscapes is being in the right place at the right time.

The passion and love for art dates back to my early childhood. Though my efforts focused on art in high school and college, I was encouraged to pursue an engineering degree. Eventually, I began to work toward making art my full time profession, producing a greater quality of realism. The most important quality of oil is its transparency. The old masters added thin layers of transparent color to get the illusion of depth . I work in this wonderful, though time consuming manner, which is rarely used in today’s market. Being a self taught and long time artist, I have painted and learned from all mediums, and continue to work primarily in watercolor and pastel. I use pastels primarily in my Plein Air painting, and watercolor, being so very compelling, pulls and draws in with it's passionate and surprising characteristics.

Being a member of several art organizations, I will be teaching classes in drawing and painting this fall, at the St. Peters Arts Centre and in my home based studio, in Wentzville, Mo.
