Just after Labor Day Jerry completed an installation of ten large (34” X 36” and  36” X 48”) enlarged photos in the office spaces of the St. Louis Community Foundation, located in the Federal Building on Fourth Street, downtown St. Louis. The president and CEO of the organization was referred to Jerry's artwork by an associate who had purchased one of his pieces in an art fair earlier in the summer. She hung it in her office, and the piece generated some buzz in the office, which led to an opportunity for Jerry to make a presentation of a number of photos that could be adapted for their common office spaces. The photos were laminated on foam core and backed with gator board for hanging. The production work was done by The Composing Room on Southwest Avenue in St. Louis.

Gateway Gallery Artist Jerry Schmutz Commissioned by Webster University.

Jerry was awarded a commissioned project for Webster University. Their president and vice president were to travel to Beijing in early September to make a presentation in respect of the 50th anniversary of the collaboration between Webster and the Chinese Language and Culture Institute there. They needed a nice gift to go along with the presentation as well as some photos to use for their PowerPoint presentation in China. Jerry was asked to get some photos of the then-running Chinese Lantern Festival at the St. Louis Botanical Garden in order to pair up a photo representing the Chinese culture with a photo of an iconic St. Louis scene or object. The composite double matted and framed photo would be presented to the Chinese during their visit and presentation. Webster chose a Chinese Lantern photo and paired it with a fairly traditional photo of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. A memorial inscription was embedded in an opening of the double mat in English and in Chinese. The president and vice president signed the mat spaces with their personal goodwill wishes.  The project was completed and FedEx ed to China just in time for the presentation. Their feedback was that they “hit it out of the park” with this one. It was very well received.

Art Fair Weekend at Gateway Gallery

Except for Friday night, the weather this past weekend was really great for an art fair. There was a lot of rain and some pretty bad winds Friday night which caused damage to some of the tents and artwork at the fair. Saturday and Sunday was sunny and not too hot. The humidity was not too high and most of the time there was a breeze.

We were pleased that a lot of visitors to the St. Louis Art Fair also stopped in to visit the with the artists at Gateway Gallery and see the art. Quite a few of those visitors also purchased art. A lot of regular Gateway fans stopped in but we also saw a lot of new faces and enjoyed meeting them. Most of the gallery artists spent time at the gallery on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday so that visitors could talk to the them about their work.
