Opening Reception Friday, May 10, 6-9 pm

(Clayton, MO/April 17) presents "Exploring the Landscape with Paint" featuring paintings by Gateway Gallery Resident Artist Daniel Fishback, May 2-May 31 with Artist Reception May 10, 6-9 pm at 21 North Bemiston in Clayton.

In 1998 Daniel started drawing and painting and took a few adult education drawing and watercolor classes, but is otherwise self-taught.  He especially enjoys being around streams, rivers, and lakes, and believes the beauty of landscape is enhanced when it is juxtaposed with a body of water reflecting elements of the land, trees, boulders, and the sky.

When Daniel was a young boy, he became fascinated with the outdoors while exploring a creek which ran about 50 yards from his Grandmother's home.  With each painting Daniel tries to place the viewer at the scene to walk down the path, wade in the stream or swim in the lake.  Many have told him his paintings have a great sense of depth, like they can almost walk into them.  His aim is to create paintings that viewers not only feel like they can walk into, but are so inviting they wish they could.

Guest artist, Denzil Hawes-Davis, will exhibit photographs as a Gateway Gallery guest artist April 8 through May 17, 2013.   Stillness-in-motion is what Denzil hopes to achieve through the lens of his camera.  If he is successful, reflections of stillness-in-motion will shine in his photos of nature and people and their various patterns, backgrounds, colors, shapes, textures, and abstracts.  According to Elizabeth Stone of Rocky Mountain School of Photography, "Denzil Hawes-Davis proposes a new way of seeing the land and his environment with his camera.  He strives to move beyond strict documentation of his subject into the non-representational world of color, shape, and light.  His images move, dance, and excite."

As a recently retired physician Denzil has shown and sold locally at the Jefferson City Capital Arts Gallery, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and at Halo Art Auctions in Kansas City and Jefferson City.  Stillness-in-Motion Photography:  http://stillness-in-motion.photoshelter.com

Guest artist, Cheryl Dorris, will exhibit photographs as a Gateway Gallery guest artist April 3, 2013 through May 17, 2013.   Photography has been Cheryl’s passion her whole life.  Through the years her work began to take shape via the landscape — open air, changing light and breathtaking beauty.  She is inspired by the warm light from a sunset, shimmering reflections on water and the crisp hues found in cities abroad.  In these places she feels both calm and energized, and is drawn to photograph them.   She loves to travel around the country and around the world and work with the images she captures.  Her work has been published in magazines and books and has been shown in various galleries around the St Louis area.  She has received recognition in numerous juried competitions, including Best in Show, Old Orchard Gallery, St Louis; and a finalist in the SEEN Competition, Studio Altius, St Louis.

Opening reception held for the artists 6-9 p.m. April 12.

(Clayton, MO/March 18) Gateway Gallery “Artini” exhibit will feature an intoxicating mix of paintings by Gateway Gallery resident artist Annie Smith Piffel.

An “artist in training” since childhood Annie Smith Piffel spent her Saturday mornings drawing along with Jon Gnagy’s art show.  Annie's work in pastels, oils, acrylics and watercolors range from realistically detailed still lifes to vibrant abstracts. While her style is varied she believes that each piece speaks its own language. Annie's work is on permanent display at the Clayton, MO City Hall and included in corporate and private collections, as well as in Canada.

Annie is a mentor to many of the students that have received private art instruction from her or attended her classes at St. Louis Community College. She teaches "The Artist in You" class for SLARC and is a board member for Turner Center for the Arts. Annie also holds classes at her studio in Maplewood where she encourages her students to create, imagine, explore and play. She hopes to ignite their passion and feed their spirit through their own art making process.
