GATEWAY GALLERY IN CLAYON PRESENTS
 “PASSAGEWAYS”,    APRIL 4 – MAY 18
Opening reception held for the artist 6-9 p.m. APRIL 13
(Clayton, MO/Feb 24, 2012) Gateway Gallery brings the photographic statements of resident artist John Barhydt to its featured artist series in the exhibit “Passageways”. . In Addition, guest artist Michael Anderson will present his heavily textured landscape paintings, including a new large scale canvas. This show runs April 4 through May 18 with an opening reception from 6 to 9 pm on Friday April13 at 21 North Bemiston Ave, Clayton
Passageways: doors, windows, hallways; these architectural elements are used every day, often without a thought.  “On the surface they can be useful and aesthetically pleasing but without looking or passing through them we have no idea what lies beyond.”  Likewise, the value of roads and trails primarily focuses on destination, getting us from point A to point B but Barhydt takes a different route. This photographer prefers to concentrate on the beauty of the journey and the intrigue of the unknown which waits for us on the other side of the door.
As a child, John was exposed to the world of film photography and the wet darkroom. “I was hooked on the magic I could create there” he reflects. John’s father taught him developing and printing technique while his grandfather supplied inspiration from stories told through his slide shows.  The advent of digital cameras added to his repertoire. The result one sees to this lifelong artist’s evolution is imagery using boldness of color and light that is designed to express the moment.
Michael Anderson is a well known and highly collected artist, illustrator and designer who resides in Belleville, IL..  For 35 years he has exhibited his paintings extensively while collaborating with designers, architects and planners on a series of projects including the St. Louis Science Center, The St. Louis Zoo and Anheuser- Busch. Most recently two 6’ tall works based on archival images were commissioned by the Laclede Gas Company and installed at its new corporate headquarters in St Louis. For this upcoming exhibit, Anderson will unveil a new landscape based large scale canvas.
