The Decoupage Art of Barbara and Greg Matchick: Special exhibit runs from August 1 – 30, 2012
The pieces in this exhibit are the collaborative works of resident artist Greg Matchick and his wife Barbara. Using skill and an eye for detail Barbara incorporates Greg’s fine art European scenes into “objets d’art” by means of the centuries old art form of decoupage, thus creating utilitarian works of art from modern-day objects. Over the last year, a small number of these pieces have been on display along with Greg’s fine art images and these works have gained increasing popularity in the last year, being collected nationwide. This is an opportunity to see the works exhibited on their own, in a greater quantity and diversity than before. This exhibit will run from August 1 – 30, 2012.
The Exhibited Pieces:
The items in this exhibit are everyday items of the 20th and 21st centuries. Wastebaskets, tissue box covers, light switch plates and coasters. In a culture where these everyday items are mass produced and simply serve a utilitarian purpose, the pieces in this exhibit bear the mark of hand crafted artisans and are truly unique. Each piece is printed by the artists on art paper and applied with decoupage techniques using multiple layers of varnish to create the finished work. The result is a work of art that can be and is intended for everyday use.

The Art of Decoupage:
The art of decorating objects by gluing colored paper to them and finishing with multiple layers of varnish dates back many centuries. By the 12th century it was being practiced in China, possibly coming from eastern Siberia. By the 17th and 18th centuries it had spread to Europe, being known as Japanning in England. Artisans in Florence , Italy refined the techniques by the 18th century producing what are now highly collectible antiques.

My work explores the relationship of forms, textures and color in the everyday world. Many of my images are extractions from an old building, a distorted reflection, an architectural detail and the juxtaposition of adjoining buildings. I use these to create abstract geometrical images. I also have always been interested in landscapes. Besides understanding composition, a big part of capturing landscapes is being in the right place at the right time.

The passion and love for art dates back to my early childhood. Though my efforts focused on art in high school and college, I was encouraged to pursue an engineering degree. Eventually, I began to work toward making art my full time profession, producing a greater quality of realism. The most important quality of oil is its transparency. The old masters added thin layers of transparent color to get the illusion of depth . I work in this wonderful, though time consuming manner, which is rarely used in today’s market. Being a self taught and long time artist, I have painted and learned from all mediums, and continue to work primarily in watercolor and pastel. I use pastels primarily in my Plein Air painting, and watercolor, being so very compelling, pulls and draws in with it's passionate and surprising characteristics.
Being a member of several art organizations, I will be teaching classes in drawing and painting this fall, at the St. Peters Arts Centre and in my home based studio, in Wentzville, Mo.

Marilyn’s “Wild” ceramic birds elicit the comment, “They make me laugh.” Her flock is hatched from a desire to be both a sculptor and a painter. Intricate manipulation of the clay to create poses and expressions inspire a sense of Pixar come to life. The versatility of acrylic paint provides a subtlety that enables her to experiment with minute details and a more painterly surface treatment. With a “sprinkling” of bling, her creations must each have a name and a story. Her pastels emulate the colorful and imaginative feel of her “Wild” birds. The mosaic-like compositions and the subtle blending of hues present an intricate graphic rendition of nature. Each piece reaches out to that thrill we all experienced in our childhood when our eyes were dazzled by bursts of color and light.
Marilyn’s art reflects her desire to communicate the whimsy, imagination, and creative excitement that children embrace. She has chosen to dedicate her work to her wonderful childhood memories, her children, and every one of her students who remind her to create from the heart.

My photography is mostly of nature and wildlife. And being a veterinarian, my interest in animal photography should be of no surprise. I see animal photography as a way of bringing more than just color or design to a wall but rather a dimension of personality as well. The animal close-ups especially demonstrate that phenomenon. The close-up view enables one to see the natural features that are usually missed in real life due to all the movement and surrounding distractions. In effect, a "personality" seems to appear. My goal is to capture this "personality" in an artistic fashion that can be displayed in a person’s home for regular enjoyment.
My interest in animal art is directed more toward wildlife rather than toward the more common domestic animals. While they usually present a challenge to photograph, I find the images to be far more fascinating. Additionally, the photography creates an environmental awareness that may even translate into improving animal welfare, especially for the African species. Through environmental abuse, habitat destruction, poaching and other human interactions the future of many of these animals is in doubt. This special photography of these species can provide a chance to enjoy their being and hopefully they will survive.
I am a juried artist for the Greater St. Louis Art Association and the Best Of Missouri Hands.

I am gearing up for the 10th annual Augusta Plein Air Event. There are usually over 100 artists painting in and around the Augusta MO wineries and the surrounding countryside. It is a great opportunity for the public to watch and purchase art that is created in their own area. It is a ten day event ending with a show and sale at the Mount Pleasant winery. Michael Anderson, returns to Gateway Gallery as a Guest Artist, April 4 – May 18.
"I am a professional artist working in traditional and digital media. Whether I am painting in oils or acrylics, sketching in water colors or even drawing digitally on a graphics tablet the challenge is always how do I make my work compelling and visually interesting to the viewer.
My recent landscape paintings feature heavily textured surfaces as well as both thick and thin paint applications. While the colors in these works are low key and intermixed on the pallette they range in value from extremely dark to very light. I paint on canvases and panels that I prepare with a layer of acrylic modeling paste troweled on with a broad knife. Once I have blocked in the scene with thin washes I sometimes remove broad areas of paint by wiping them out with a paper towel and thinner. This helps to refine the five to seven basic shapes of the composition which are then painted more thickly often referred to as painting “fat over lean”. Besides a square ended painting knife I use only a few brushes, flats mainly. My favorite brushes are the beat-up ones that look like the burr of a thistle attached to the end of a stick. While the paint is still wet I usually go back into completed areas with a painting knife and literally carve lines into the surface to create more textures and details not possible with a brush. My goal in future paintings is to scale up these techniques on larger canvases with bigger brushes, larger knives and more paint." –Michael Anderson

She is a Southern Illinois University-Carbondale graduate and has participated in the ARTEAST open studio tour for the last 10 years. Vivid. Bold. Expressionistic. Such terms only begin to describe the artwork of Bowling Green native Lisa Crisman. Crisman always knew she wanted to be an artist, since she was a child.
“I grew up dreaming about making art,” Crisman said. Her father, Durward “Woody” Crisman worked as a jeweler in Bowling Green for 47 years. He was the owner of Woody’s Jewelry and Repair located off the square. Crisman’s first job was waitressing at the old A and W restaurant.
“I also worked at the old Dairy Queen, the one where the Chinese restaurant is now,” Crisman recalled with a chuckle.

Sometimes being an abstract or non- representational painter leaves the artist feeling that they need to prove themselves. A large population of viewers do not understand or "Get" that style of painting and dismiss it as not true art. I have found that I occasionally need to prove myself as an artist by very simply painting a "Pretty" painting.

I found the Sunrise-Sunset theme to be a starting point because everyone can easily relate. It is a nice change for me to switch gears like this but I am always drawn back to working larger, less restricting work that makes the viewer think about what they are looking at rather than being an obvious subject.
But for now I will enjoy a beautiful sunset and my moment of Zen.

Gateway Gallery Grand Opening ... a Grand Success!
In spite of the unkind freezing rain that couldn't have come at a more inappropriate time, it was quite a party. Thanks to all who ventured out to see the new artwork of both resident artists and guest artists. It was a very festive evening. Some people took us up on our challenge to impress us with their own creative version of black tie attire (see photo below).
Many people left with some very nice door prizes donated by resident artists and local businesses. A number of other happy folks purchased original artworks, photographs, greeting cards, and more.
We encourage those of you who decided not to risk a fender bender to come in to see the work before the show ends on February 17.

The Art of Lisa Crisman
St. Louis artist Lisa Crisman grew up in a small midwestern town, Bowling Green, Missouri. Commenting on her childhood, she states, "My mother is an artist, my grandmother was an artist, and an artist is what I've always wanted to be. She devotes as many of her waking hours as possible to her art. Her training is comprised of independent and private study. Lisa is passionate about using bold and vibrant color in her work, rarely using "local" color. Her paintings have been described as "Van Gogh meets Munch", "Vivid and Expressive!" and "a new and contemporary take on the landscape." These unique traits distinguish her from many other artists. Lisa's art has been juried into many prestigious fine art fairs and exhibitions across the country, and her paintings hang in businesses and private collections throughout the nation. She has received numerous awards for her pastel and watercolor landscapes, including: 2009 2nd place Best in Show, Fine Art Competition Taste of St. Louis. 2011 Purchase Award, Old Capitol Art Fair, Springfield, Illinois. 2011 1st Place Fine Art Competition, Missouri State Fair.
The Art of Joseph Eultgen
Joseph Eultgen's passion for woodworking has spanned 33 years for clients throughout the United States. He began his learning process by building theatrical sets, as well as building sets and props for movies. He is primarily self taught, having worked in shops and mills to learn production techniques. Joseph now builds one of a kind high end furniture, such as entertainment centers, custom cabinetry, liturgical furniture, and other custom architectural mill work. His specialty is the use of exotic hardwoods (such as Carpathian Burl elm and Macasser ebony), veneer work, inlay and marquetry. Joseph had the lifetime honor of designing/building two chairs for Pope John Paul II while the Pope was visiting St. Louis. Joseph's passion and drive for woodworking is accredited to his family.
The Art of Sujata Tibrewala
Sujata has been collecting many accolades, and art competition prizes in school and college alike e.g. Creative Artists Society, Prasar Yagna: The Advertising Club, ART Slant, New York. Few of her art works were also featured on cover page of the leading children’s Magazine Balhans in Rajasthan. Her works got showcased at PAN IIT global summit among the "right brains of the IITians", one of her paintings was selected as a fundraiser for Memphis farmer's market annul fund raising, and her video on Vibhutipura lake was selected by "the lost of bangalores" to be awarded and used by the local authorities to get money sanctioned for the lake restoration. Her story was featured on the Titan "Be more" web site. Her work met rave reviews and got written about in all leading papers of Bangalore and Rajasthan, Rajasthan Patrika, Hindustan Times, Punjab Kesri, Dainik Mehka Bharat, Hum Log, Daily News, Times of India, Deccan Herald, Indian Express, Bangalore Mirror etc. ETV Kannada, Tv9 Jaipur and Bangalore News Network (BNN) also recognized her work with and Child Helpline NGO APSA and lauded her. Her paintings are collected by institution and individuals alike. AID India, Shared Heritage (University of Maryland), CAO VIMS are a few collectors of her work.
